Construction Electric Motors

Three kind of constructions have been admitted to the database, namely:

1. PM brushed motors

2. PM brushless motors

3. AC PM synchronous motors

The common denominator of these three kind of motors is that they use permanent magnets (PM) to create the magnetic field that is necessary to be able to generate the driving torque. This is contrary to 'the' other manner in generating an electrical field, namely with the use of electromagnets. The advantage of permanent magnets w.r.t. electromagnets is that these will make the electric motors more compact and generate less heat.
This is because no current is necessary to generate the field, and because an electromagnet needs a larger volume to create a field with the same strength as a permanent magnet. Especially compared to modern magnet materials.
